Activities
Conservation & Animal Tracking
Playing our part in animal conservation

Discover a unique adventure at Mapesu by participating in our animal tracking experience, essential to our conservation work. This exciting activity aims to locate animals using telemetry, technology, and old-fashioned tracking. It will include both mobile and on-foot tracking while accompanied by an experienced guide.
This experience will leave you with a deeper understanding of the different endangered species we have at Mapesu. We want to make sure we continue to protect these species and offer them a safe place to roam freely.
Game Drives & Walking Safaris
Get up close & personal

Our guests go on game drives in Mapungubwe National Park, which is renowned for its dramatic sandstone landscapes and diverse wildlife.
For a truly immersive experience, opt for a guided walking safari, where you can explore the bush on foot and gain an intimate understanding of the region’s ecosystem.
Bird Spotting
Mapesu is truly a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Birdwatching enthusiasts staying at Mapesu will appreciate its proximity to Mapungubwe National Park, an Important Birding Area (IBA) recognized by BirdLife International for its crucial role in protecting globally threatened species. Here, you might spot breeding White-backed Vultures and possibly breeding Kori Bustards, while the riverine forests provide a home for the elusive, subtropical Pel’s Fishing Owl.
The Limpopo and Maloutswa floodplains are key habitats for wetland-dependent birds such as the Black Stork, Woolly-necked Stork, Saddle-billed Stork, Greater Painted-snipe, and White-crowned Lapwing, with occasional appearances by Great White Pelican, Lesser Moorhen, and Allen’s Gallinule. The diverse woodlands within Mapesu and Mapungubwe National Park host species like the Red-crested Korhaan, White-throated Robin-chat, Kurrichane Thrush, and Burnt-necked Eremomela.
The Limpopo Valley also supports magnificent large birds like the Martial Eagle, Bateleur Eagle, Tawny Eagle, and Marabou stork. Interestingly, this region marks the southern limit for many Afrotropical bird species, including the Tropical Boubou, Broad-billed Roller, and Meve’s Starling, which are scarce within South Africa but more common further north.
