Cheetah Reintroduction Project

Being involved in expanding the cheetah population and safeguarding their valuable genetic diversity bring us hope for their future.

On December 2017, after months of preparation and organization and in alignment with Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Cheetah Meta Population Project (Endangered Wildlife Trust), we are able to reintroduce the Queen of the Savanna back to this area. Aligning with EWT will assist in the viability of cheetahs, ensure long-term genetic and demographic integrity, and maximize conservation benefits.

A recent report by the Zoological Society of London in December 2016, states the latest population of wild cheetah in Africa is now at 7,100, where just a few years ago it was around 9,000-12,000. In the last 100 years, we have lost over 90% of the world’s population and the sharp decline continues.

What are the problems that created their plight to survive? Firstly, habitat loss and fragmentation due to human encroachment, which leads to the human-wildlife conflict. Because humans are infringing into their territory seeking more space for livestock and agriculture, more and more encounters and killings of these amazing animals are occurring.  Another main problem is the illegal wildlife trade, which is increasing as cheetahs are still widely stolen or killed as a status symbol including trophy hunting.

As the cheetah’s territory shrinks, the future of the species is in the hands of people who must share their land with this apex predator. Lands are often disjointed or divided by fences from one property to the next thus disrupting their hunting grounds. Cheetahs, also must compete in the same area with other predators of which can kill them and their offspring.

It is for that reason we got involved. By providing large spaces and combining efforts with the EWT’s program, it allowed the further spread over a greater distance in which helps diversify their gene pool. Also, we can help safeguard them from dangers or trespassing into more populated areas thereby saving them from harm.

We have come dangerously close to accepting the homeless situation as a problem that we just can’t solve.
